Denise Yaghmourian is a sculptor who works with paper pulp, wood, thread, vinyl, and found objects. She is best known for wall-mounted wooden cubes covered with machine-made monochromatic materials in primary colors that have been likened to Donald Judd’s works for their austerity and seriality. The boxes are wrapped with thread and adorned with hooks or other small metallic objects to form regimented rows and patterns, intending to transform mass-produced materials into formal studies of shape and pattern. Expressing a fascination in the ideas and processes of cloning, Yaghmourian says, “I am intrigued by the subtle and sometimes more obvious changes that occur in the repetition of the same object or image.” Other work includes a 2010 series of “figured cubes”, consisting of abstracted human figures (measuring approximately 8-9 inches in height) standing on black pedestals.
